dVORišTe – Bringing Experience to Life
Teatro VeRRdi – Producer of the Artistic dVORišTe
Teatro VeRRdi is a non-profit arts organisation founded in 1999 and registered with the Register of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia in 2002. Its work is primarily rooted in contemporary theatre and other performing arts, alongside interdisciplinary discursive programmes focused on the analysis of human and social relations. Without a permanent performance venue, its programmes are realised nomadically in indoor and outdoor spaces, locally and regionally, while the organisation is based in Zadar.
Since 2026, “dVORišTe – Nomadic Spaces of Play” has been the artistic production label of Teatro VeRRdi.
We are funded through public funds, income generated by our own activities, and donations from citizens.
Our annual budgets generally range between €30,000 and €50,000, with approximately 30% coming from our own income and donations. An average annual programme includes two festivals, one premiere, around ten performances and guest appearances, and fees for some twenty artists, alongside administrative costs.
DONATIONS from citizens are a valuable form of solidarity and support for our work — join us and support what we do with a donation.

Mission – Ethics as Aesthetics
Art! Resist conformism! Habit to marrit!
The routines of everyday life tend to mould the human mind and spirit into conformity, reducing emotion to the material, responsibility to indifference, determination to servility, and reason to a calculator. Conformism deadens experience, dulls our senses, extinguishes our capacity to feel, feeds in the shallows, and serves those in power perfectly.
CONFORMISM RAUS!
Our mission, through the dynamics of resistance, is to use art to plunge into the depths of the human spirit — both individual and collective — for life as experience brought to life, as an arresting of transience, as gymnastics for the soul, a training ground for emotionality and for understanding ourselves; the outer and inner worlds through knowledge and self-knowledge. Guided by the principle of ethics as aesthetics (or vice versa), we awaken the mechanisms of freedom as a foundation for social awareness, empathy and attentiveness.
We want to:
-
Shake up, purify, exhilarate, provoke thought, entertain, get people dancing and playing, make them laugh, deepen — imagination, feeling, attitude!
-
Stand against fear, suffering, ill will, callousness, indifference, hatred and violence.
-
Foster love, understanding, solidarity, resistance to oppressors, and freedom, according to the principles of humanist ethics.
Individuality as the Possibility of the Collective
The artistic process is at once a solitary, individual act and a dialogue with one’s surroundings, creating a collective dynamic of relationships. In our case, these relationships aspire to be progressive, convivial and socially engaged. The choice of collaborators who ultimately form the informal collective dynamic of dVORišTe happens gradually, following the long-standing direction of our production and thus subtly building a lasting network of professionals who — by no coincidence, and through a shared affinity of worldview and aesthetics — spread humanist ideas and care for people through their work around the world. This affinity of worldview and aesthetics should not be understood narrowly through the divisions of day-to-day politics. Art must be free to draw on a broad spectrum of influences and choices, with one fundamental and indispensable principle: love and care for the good in human beings.
We thank all the individuals, organisations, groups and collectives who have taken part in our programmes free of charge or for minimal fees, driven by the conviction that their engagement was taking place in a good environment and for the good of that environment.
Here we share some of the people as examples — there is too little space for everyone; a more complete record can be found in the MONOGRAPH — dividing those who have contributed through their engagement into COLLABORATORS, whose longer-term involvement has influenced the development of our conceptual approaches, and PARTICIPANTS, whose engagement has strengthened the work and production of Teatro VeRRdi’s dVORišTe. Authentic Approach to Artistic Creation
Independently and in collaboration with partner organisations and individuals, dVORišTe carries out its activities through the production of performances, festivals and discursive programmes, as well as actions, provocations and other forms of public engagement employing artistic and activist practices from the fields of art, science and social activism. It also provides production support to independent artistic and socially engaged projects.
Our working principle is nomadic and DIY, relying on our own organisational and technical capacities as well as those of our collaborators.
The organisation has a particular interest in connecting artists across disciplines and outside institutional frameworks; fostering intercultural dialogue; building links between the institutional and independent sectors; awakening the periphery and developing communication with the centre; and developing regional and international collaborations that enable artistic exchange, mobility and the strengthening of the organisation’s resources. These activities also create the conditions for developing new projects for the benefit of both the organisation and the wider community.
The aesthetics of our artistic practice are rooted in immediacy, informality and direct communication, alongside a careful use of stage technology which, through sophisticated and considered approaches, seeks to heighten the awareness of participants, audiences and performers while pursuing solutions that are innovative yet simple. The themes and forms of dVORišTe productions arise from a personal need to question both individual and social reality and, as such, carry the authenticity of lived experience — whether in our own productions, collaborative projects or guest performances.
Highlights – Risks That Left Their Mark
Every artistic endeavour, when it is exploratory and driven by an inner impulse rather than by production or market calculations, is a risk — one that can sometimes lead to failure. By carefully and economically balancing our ambitions with our possibilities, our productions generally succeed in achieving an important aspect of sustainability: the longevity of the work itself. Despite modest budgets, the lack of a permanent performance venue, and our distance from dominant cultural and market policies, most of our programmes have managed to sustain a continuity of activity uncommon among comparable organisations on the independent scene.
A particular commitment to integrating life and art remains a stubborn guarantee of survival — as does, perhaps, the fact that in the environment we inhabit, we have little choice but to establish our own space of play. A space in which the exchange of convivial relationships through emotionally charged artistic content becomes a shared value between performers and audiences.
Here we highlight a number of significant productions and events whose accumulated experience has become a source of value on which we base our confidence in both our present and future work:
-
2005 — Radovan Ivšić’s visit to Zadar: a literary matinée and the premiere of King Gordogan.
-
2007 — Juraj Aras: Nulovanje, an original monodrama directed by Christian Suchy from Vienna; around thirty performances, four guest appearances, two through the Clubture platform, and an award for acting.
-
2006–2011 — Organisation of the Obrovac Cultural Summer in collaboration with the OKLJ association.
-
2008–2011 — ARTIKULTURA project at Kino Pobjeda, in collaboration with seven other associations; around 250 events organised for approximately 10,000 spectators.
-
2010 — SCREAM by Boris Kadin, co-produced with Glej Theatre Ljubljana; seven international guest performances.
-
2010 — The Place Where We Haven’t Been by Žanina Mirčevska, directed by Natalija Manojlović, featuring guest actors Dario Varga and Uroš Maček from the Slovene Youth Theatre in Ljubljana.
-
2011 — EU PIONIR, a music performance; collaboration with NMG – Mavena.
-
2013 — Bankruptcy, a performance about the individual as a unit of capital burdened by debt, based on texts by Maurizio Lazzarato, Ben Stigler, Boris Postnikov, Damir Avdić and The Black Book of the Swiss Franc.
-
2013–2014 — TRAFO project in collaboration with Kristin Guttenberg and The Moving Academy Berlin: workshops in performative-activist direct intervention within the community.
-
2014–2019 — ARTAKT Festival.
-
2015 — Desnica: Games of Spring and Death, based on Vladan Desnica’s The Springs of Ivan Galeb. Selected by Igor Ružić for the 2016 Marulić Days programme; around thirty performances and seven guest appearances. The production officially opened the small auditorium of the Zadar Puppet Theatre, performed at ZKM between 15 and 20 December 2016, and at the Janković Tower in Islam Grčki, where the novel was written. It was also featured on Ante Perković’s programme The Hidden Side of the Day on Croatian Radio 3.
-
2015 — Installation of a commemorative plaque on Vladan Desnica’s birthplace; its subsequent removal by the city authorities sparked controversy in four national newspapers.
-
2016 — Othello: An Unlawful Liturgy, directed by Zlatko Paković from Belgrade and featuring guest actress Hrvojka Begović from ZKM. Political theatre addressing Europe’s policies towards immigrants and examining racism, power, the state, patriarchy and the love “we have grown accustomed to loving”; around thirty performances and a regional tour.
-
2016 — NOSI SE, originally a Teatro VeRRdi showcase of its own work, develops into a meeting place for independent projects. With the addition of Discursive Relay, it evolves a polemical format for confronting social reality, culminating in an attempt to ban the festival in Benkovac in 2025.
-
2018 — DERIVAT, an open-air festival of good music and conviviality, featuring energetic performers ranging from rock ’n’ roll to electronic music alongside fairs and workshops, conceived in a nomadic format.

-
2025 — Make Room for ____, an original production written and directed by Hrvoje Korbar, co-produced with Studio Tres Pas and in collaboration with the Ribnjak Centre.
